Apple’s iPhone Duo Just Raised the Bar: The Features Android Foldables Must Steal in 2027 (And Why the Game Has Changed)

Apple waited nearly a decade after Samsung’s first Galaxy Fold before entering the foldable market. When it finally did, on September 9, 2026, the company didn’t simply launch another book-style device. It launched the iPhone Duo—a passport-style foldable that starts at $1,999 and arrives as a polished first attempt that already exposes lingering weaknesses in the Android foldable ecosystem.

Here is an expanded analysis of those eight features, the context around them, the trade-offs Apple itself made, and what this means for the foldable market heading into 2027.


1. Stylus Support on a True Tablet-Sized Canvas


The iPhone Duo supports Apple Pencil on both the cover display and the inner foldable screen. Note-taking, markup, drawing, and precise input finally feel native on a device that unfolds into something closer to a mini-tablet.

Android makers have largely abandoned or never fully committed to this. Samsung dropped S Pen support after the Galaxy Z Fold 6 era; the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 lack it. Google has never offered a first-party stylus experience on the Pixel Fold series. Motorola remains one of the few holdouts with stylus options on certain Razr Fold models.

This is not a minor omission. When you carry a device whose main selling point is a large, flexible inner display, the inability to write or draw on it with precision feels like a waste of the form factor. The productivity argument for foldables has always been stronger than pure media consumption, and a good stylus experience strengthens that case dramatically. Apple’s ecosystem advantage with Pencil is real, but the hardware capability itself is what Android needs to restore or expand.


2. True IP68 Dust and Water Resistance as Standard


The iPhone Duo carries a full IP68 rating, putting it in line with regular flagship iPhones for dust and water protection.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 still sits at IP48—water-resistant but without the same dust protection rating that full IP68 provides. Google achieved IP68 earlier with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and continues it on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, proving the engineering is possible without destroying the form factor.

At the prices these devices command ($1,800–$2,000+), treating them as more fragile than a conventional slab phone undermines confidence. Dust resistance matters in real-world use. Sand, pocket lint, and everyday debris have historically been enemies of hinges and flexible displays. Making IP68 the baseline rather than a differentiator should be non-negotiable for 2027 flagships.


3. Preserving Flex Mode (or Equivalent Partial-Fold Functionality)


Samsung’s titanium hinge on the Z Fold 8 improved durability and reduced the crease, but it eliminated traditional Flex Mode—the ability to hold the device partially open at multiple angles for hands-free photography, video calls, or split-screen use.

The iPhone Duo retains the ability to stay partially folded for useful scenarios without sacrificing its reduced crease. This is one of the purest expressions of the foldable form factor. Losing it for hinge refinement is a step backward in usability. Android manufacturers need to engineer hinges that deliver both durability/crease reduction and multi-angle flexibility. Sacrificing one for the other is no longer acceptable.


4. Anti-Reflective (Nano-Texture) Inner Displays


Apple applied a nano-texture finish to the Duo’s inner display, borrowing from MacBook Pro technology. The result is reduced glare and, importantly, a crease that is harder to notice in daily use.

Flexible OLED materials are inherently more reflective than rigid glass. Samsung has made progress with anti-reflective coatings on the Z Fold 8, but it is not universal across Android foldables. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s inner panel, for example, still draws criticism for reflectivity.

When the inner screen is the entire reason people buy these phones, optimizing it for real lighting conditions is fundamental. Matte or nano-texture treatments that also help mask the crease should become standard rather than premium extras.


5. Native Qi2 / MagSafe-Style Magnetic Wireless Charging


The iPhone Duo supports MagSafe out of the box, which means full compatibility with the growing Qi2 accessory ecosystem without requiring a special case.

Many Android flagships—including the Galaxy Z Fold 8—still lack native magnetic wireless charging. Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold is one of the exceptions. In 2026–2027, this should no longer be optional on devices that cost nearly $2,000. Magnetic alignment improves charging reliability, enables better accessory ecosystems (stands, wallets, batteries), and reduces friction in daily use.


6. Under-Display Cameras for an Uninterrupted Inner Screen


Apple used an under-display camera on the Duo’s inner display. When not in use for FaceTime or selfies, there is no visible punch-hole or cutout.

Samsung previously employed under-display cameras on earlier Galaxy Z Fold models before abandoning them, citing image quality limitations. Apple’s implementation suggests the technology has advanced enough to be viable again. An uninterrupted canvas is one of the aesthetic and practical advantages of a foldable’s large inner screen. If the quality trade-off can be minimized, bringing under-display cameras back (or improving them) is worth another serious look from Android makers.


7. Near-Creaseless Displays on the First Try


Early impressions indicate Apple achieved a less noticeable crease on its first-generation foldable than many multi-generation Android devices still show, particularly compared with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and some Razr models. Samsung improved the crease significantly on the Z Fold 8, but it has not disappeared.

After years of iteration, Android manufacturers have less excuse for visible creases. Materials science, hinge design, and display lamination have all advanced. Apple’s results on day one raise the competitive bar: “improved but still visible” is no longer good enough for premium pricing.


8. High-Capacity Storage Options Up to 2TB


Apple offers a 2TB configuration on the iPhone Duo. Samsung and Google top out at 1TB on the Z Fold 8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Foldable phones are expensive devices that many buyers keep longer than conventional phones. Local storage still matters for media, offline work, large apps, and camera libraries—especially on a device that encourages creative use. Offering a 2TB option (even if it is expensive and niche) signals longevity and removes a practical limitation. Android makers should match or exceed this ceiling.


The Broader Context: Apple’s Trade-Offs and Android’s Remaining Strengths


The iPhone Duo is not perfect, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest analysis. It is thicker and heavier than most current Android foldables: approximately 11.3 mm folded and 254 g, versus the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s roughly 9.7 mm / 201 g and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s 10.1 mm / 239 g. It lacks a telephoto camera in some configurations, relies on Touch ID rather than Face ID in certain reports, and carries the usual first-generation risks.

Android still leads in several areas: more aggressive multitasking (three-app split-screen, DeX on Samsung), greater hardware variety (clamshell flips, different aspect ratios, Ultra variants), often faster charging, and in some cases better camera systems or lighter builds. Software flexibility and customization remain Android strengths.

Yet Apple’s advantages in software-hardware integration are already visible. Seamless content handoff animations between cover and inner displays, deep Pencil integration, and the expectation that iPad-optimized apps will scale more cleanly to the Duo’s canvas give it an experiential edge that pure specs cannot capture.


What This Means for 2027 and Beyond


The foldable category has moved past the novelty phase. Buyers now expect durability close to conventional flagships, software that truly exploits the dual-screen nature of the device, and refinement that justifies the premium. Apple’s entry accelerates that expectation.

Samsung, Google, Motorola, and others do not need to copy every Apple decision. They need to close the gaps that the Duo has highlighted: restore or improve stylus support, standardize full IP68 protection, keep useful partial-fold modes, prioritize anti-reflective inner panels, adopt native magnetic wireless charging, reconsider under-display cameras if quality allows, continue driving crease reduction, and expand high-end storage options.

The healthiest outcome is not one platform “winning.” It is a competitive cycle that produces better devices for everyone. Apple waited until the technology was mature enough to meet its standards. The response from Android makers in 2027 will show whether they treat that arrival as a threat or as the catalyst the category still needed.

The iPhone Duo is not the end of the foldable conversation. It is the moment the conversation got more interesting—and more demanding. Android foldables that ignore these lessons risk looking like they stopped improving just when the bar finally rose.
