For years, the iPhone has dominated smartphone photography by making great images almost effortless. Point, shoot, and Apple’s computational photography pipeline—Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, Photonic Engine, and a host of neural processing tricks—delivers consistently excellent results that look polished straight out of the camera. That strength has also been a limitation. Serious photographers and enthusiasts who wanted real manual control over shutter speed, white balance, aperture, and exposure tools often had to turn to third-party apps or simply accept the constraints of Apple’s tightly curated Camera app.
That changes with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Announced on September 9, 2026, these models introduce a customizable “Pro Controls” interface inside the native Camera app, paired with a genuine hardware innovation: a physical variable aperture on the new 48MP Fusion Main camera. The combination marks one of the most meaningful shifts in Apple’s photography philosophy in recent years. It does not abandon the point-and-shoot excellence that made the iPhone famous. Instead, it finally gives power users the tools Android flagships have offered for years—while adding a mechanical aperture system that few Android phones have matched with this level of integration.
The Hardware Breakthrough: Six Blades Thinner Than a Human Hair
The centerpiece is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera. Unlike previous generations that relied on a fixed aperture (the iPhone 17 Pro used f/1.78), the iPhone 18 Pro features a true variable aperture system. Six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair and made from a specialized polymer composite, move via a rotor mechanism. A customized lens ensures optical quality remains high across the range.
Users (and the camera itself) can select among four discrete settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. The widest setting (f/1.48) lets in roughly 50% more light than previous fixed apertures in dark environments, improving low-light performance and speeding up Night mode. Narrower settings deliver greater depth of field—useful for group photos or landscapes where you want more of the scene sharp—while the mid-range options balance light gathering and subject isolation.
Apple designed the system to work automatically. The camera evaluates lighting and the desired depth of field and adjusts the blades accordingly. Photographers can also take full manual control through the new Pro Controls interface. A developer API further opens the aperture range to third-party apps, so specialized camera software can access finer or continuous control beyond the four presets.
This is not a software simulation of depth of field. It is a mechanical iris, the kind long taken for granted on dedicated cameras and previously seen in limited form on phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 (which offered a dual-aperture switch between f/1.5 and f/2.4 back in 2018). The iPhone implementation is more refined, with smoother transitions, multiple stops, and tight integration into Apple’s computational pipeline.
Pro Controls: Manual Tools Inside the Native Camera App
Hardware is only half the story. The new Pro Controls section in the Camera app finally brings core manual parameters into Apple’s own interface:

- White balance
- Aperture (the four physical settings)
- Live histogram for checking exposure distribution across the scene
The interface is customizable, so users can prioritize the tools they use most. These controls work for both stills and video. Additional refinements include updated Photographic Styles with texture and grain adjustments, giving images a more film-like or custom look before or after capture. Smart Focus Tracking uses on-device AI models to lock onto a subject and maintain focus even if the subject briefly leaves the frame and returns or changes depth.
Video gains meaningful upgrades too. Cinematic mode effects (the software-simulated shallow depth of field) can now be applied after capture to regular video shot at up to 4K/60. Time-lapse supports 4K resolution in Dolby Vision HDR. Audio Mix algorithms have improved, including better handling of music.
Apple has also leaned into authenticity in an era of generative AI. Support for content credentials (including C2PA-style verification) and a new “Reference Image” or “Apple Reference” mode cryptographically signs sensor data at capture, creating an unalterable digital negative that can be viewed alongside the processed image.
Why This Matters: Closing the Android Gap
None of these individual features will shock longtime Android users. Google added robust Pro controls—including manual shutter speed, ISO, and white balance—to the Pixel 8 Pro in 2023. Samsung’s Expert RAW app has long offered shutter speed, white balance, a live histogram, and extensive RAW capabilities. Samsung even shipped physical dual-aperture hardware years earlier. Many Android flagships have also offered more granular focus peaking, zebra highlights, and waveform/histogram tools.
Apple’s approach has historically been different: prioritize computational photography that works for the vast majority of users, keep the interface clean, and leave advanced tools to the App Store. The result was excellent everyday photos and occasional frustration for enthusiasts who preferred direct control without installing extra apps or wrestling with limitations.
The iPhone 18 Pro does not fully abandon that philosophy. Automatic modes remain powerful and the default experience stays simple. What changes is the availability of genuine manual tools and a mechanical aperture that expands creative options in ways software alone cannot fully replicate. On a small smartphone sensor, the depth-of-field difference between f/1.48 and f/4 is real but not dramatic by full-frame standards. Still, having the option—especially when combined with computational tools—gives photographers more intentional control over light, motion, and subject isolation.
Samsung’s playful reaction on X shortly after the event (“Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers”) captured the tone many Android fans felt. The features feel familiar. The difference is Apple’s execution: seamless integration, high optical quality across the aperture range, developer access, and the company’s usual polish.
Broader Context and Remaining Limitations
The camera story sits alongside other iPhone 18 Pro upgrades—A20 Pro (reportedly Apple’s first 2nm chip for the lineup), improved thermal management with refined vapor chambers, better battery life, and the usual incremental design and performance refinements. The ultrawide and telephoto cameras remain largely carried over (both 48MP), so the main camera is clearly the focus of this generation’s imaging investment.
Limitations remain. The four discrete aperture stops are useful but not the continuous range of a traditional lens. Full manual focus, advanced exposure scopes, focus peaking, and highlight warnings appear to be arriving or expanding in the broader iOS Camera app ecosystem, but some of the most specialized tools may still favor third-party apps. Sensor size constraints mean the physical aperture’s impact on depth of field is more modest than on larger-format cameras. And while Pro Controls are a big step, power users who live in RAW workflows may still prefer dedicated apps for the deepest feature sets.

The Bigger Picture for Smartphone Photography
The iPhone 18 Pro’s camera updates represent a quiet but significant maturation. Apple is no longer content to rely almost entirely on computational magic and a simplified interface. By adding real mechanical aperture control and native Pro tools, the company acknowledges that a meaningful segment of its audience wants—and benefits from—more agency over the image-making process.
At the same time, the automatic experience remains the priority. Most users will never open Pro Controls, and they will still get excellent results. That dual approach is classic Apple: give the majority something that “just works,” while finally offering the minority the levers they have long requested.
Whether this narrows the creative gap enough to win over dedicated Android photographers remains to be seen in real-world testing. What is already clear is that the conversation has shifted. The iPhone is no longer the phone that forces serious shooters to choose between convenience and control. For the first time, it seriously attempts to deliver both.
In an industry that has spent years racing on megapixels, AI features, and computational tricks, the return of a physical iris and honest manual controls feels almost refreshing. Sometimes the most progressive camera upgrade is the one that looks a little more like the past.
