Phone scams have evolved from clumsy robocalls and poorly worded scripts into sophisticated, real-time social engineering attacks. AI voice cloning, number spoofing, and carefully engineered pressure tactics now make it far harder for ordinary people to distinguish a genuine call from a fraudulent one. Against this backdrop, Google’s on-device Scam Detection feature has become one of the more practical defenses available on Android. Originally a Pixel exclusive, it has already reached Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series. Fresh evidence from an APK teardown suggests the next major manufacturer to receive it could be vivo.
This development is more than a feature rollout. It signals a broader shift in how Google is distributing its most effective call-protection tools across the Android ecosystem, and it arrives at a moment when the scale and sophistication of voice-based fraud continue to climb.
How Scam Detection Actually Works
Scam Detection listens to live call audio (only when the user has opted in) and looks for conversational patterns commonly associated with fraud. Classic examples include urgent requests for payment via gift cards, demands to move money because of an alleged account compromise, pressure to share one-time passwords or install remote-access software, and other high-pressure scripts that scammers rely on. When the system judges the risk high enough, it triggers a visual warning on screen along with audio and haptic alerts so the user notices immediately, even if the phone is not being held to the ear.
On Pixel 9 and newer devices the feature is powered by Gemini Nano running entirely on-device. Older supported Pixels use other Google on-device machine-learning models. Critically, Google states that neither the audio nor any transcript leaves the device, is stored after the call, or is sent to Google’s servers. The feature is off by default; users must actively enable it. It does not run on calls with numbers already saved in the user’s contacts. An audible beep periodically informs both parties that the feature is active.
The system is not perfect. Google itself notes that not every scam will be caught and that scammers continually adapt their tactics. Still, the real-time interruption of the social-engineering script has proven useful enough that Google has steadily expanded both the geographic availability and the device support for the feature.
From Pixel Exclusive to Multi-OEM Reality
Scam Detection first appeared as a public beta for English-speaking Pixel users in the United States in late 2024 and reached wider availability in subsequent Feature Drops. Over time it expanded to additional countries (including the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, India and others) and to more Pixel models. For a long period it remained tied to the Phone by Google app and to Pixel hardware.
That exclusivity began to erode in early 2026. Google confirmed that Scam Detection would be available on the Samsung Galaxy S26 series through Samsung’s own phone app rather than requiring the Google dialer. The feature launched limited to English speakers in the United States, using on-device Gemini processing. This marked the first time a major non-Pixel manufacturer shipped Google’s conversational scam-detection technology.
Now a teardown of Phone by Google version 234.0.9 has revealed code that associates the internal codename “Sharpie” (Google’s name for Scam Detection) with vivo. The presence of vivo alongside existing references to Google and Samsung strongly suggests the Chinese manufacturer is next in line. No official announcement has been made, and teardowns are inherently predictive rather than definitive; features can be delayed, limited, or cancelled. Nevertheless, the pattern of previous expansions makes the possibility credible.
Why vivo Makes Sense — and What Remains Unknown
vivo occupies an interesting position. In China the company uses its own dialer; in many global markets it relies on the Phone by Google app. That dual approach means Scam Detection could theoretically appear either inside vivo’s native dialer (mirroring the Samsung implementation) or inside the Google dialer that already ships on many international vivo devices. The teardown does not clarify which route will be taken.
Device support is equally unclear. Observers have speculated that the feature could debut on the rumored vivo X500 series, with later arrival on the existing X300 series. Nothing is confirmed. Regional availability, language support, and whether the implementation will use Gemini Nano or a lighter on-device model also remain open questions. Samsung’s initial rollout was tightly limited; a similar cautious approach with vivo would not be surprising.
The Wider Context: Rising Scam Pressure and Complementary Defenses
The expansion of Scam Detection is occurring against a backdrop of sharply rising voice-related fraud. Industry and law-enforcement reports document large increases in AI-assisted phishing and voice-cloning attacks. Voice clones can now be generated from only a few seconds of publicly available audio, and scammers use them in “family emergency” and “grandparent” schemes that exploit emotional urgency. Imposter scams continue to rank among the most financially damaging categories reported to authorities. Trust in ordinary phone calls has declined in multiple markets as a result.
Google has layered additional protections around the same problem. These include:
- Fake call detection / contact verification: When both parties use Phone by Google with RCS, the system can verify that a call claiming to come from a saved contact is actually originating from that contact’s device. Missing confirmation signals trigger warnings about possible spoofing or AI impersonation.
- In-call screen-sharing and financial-app alerts: Android can warn users and introduce friction (including a pause and a one-tap end-call option) when they open supported banking or payment apps while screen-sharing during a call with an unknown number.
- Message-side Scam Detection: Similar pattern recognition applied to SMS and chat conversations.
- Call Screen and spam blocking: Longer-standing tools that filter or screen calls before the user answers.
Together these features form a multi-stage defense that attempts to interrupt scams at different points — before the call is answered, during the conversation, and when the user is about to take a high-risk action such as sharing a screen or transferring money.
Google is also working on expanding Scam Detection itself. Code flags have appeared for enabling the feature on outgoing calls, closing a potential loophole in which a scammer might persuade the victim to place the call rather than receiving one.
Privacy, Limitations, and Realistic Expectations
Privacy remains a central design claim. Because processing stays on-device and is ephemeral, Google argues the feature does not create a new surveillance surface. Users retain the ability to disable it globally or for individual calls. The periodic beep provides transparency to the other party.
Limitations are equally important to acknowledge. The system depends on recognizable patterns; novel or highly customized scripts can evade detection. Language coverage is still incomplete in many markets. Availability is gated by device, region, and (in some cases) carrier SIM. False positives, while not widely reported as a major problem, remain possible. And no technical safeguard replaces basic user caution: never share one-time codes, never transfer money under pressure, and always independently verify unexpected requests through a known channel.
What This Means for Android Users and the Ecosystem
If the vivo integration materializes, Scam Detection will have moved from a Pixel differentiator to a capability available on three of the larger Android manufacturers. That trajectory matters. Pixel remains a relatively small share of the global Android market. Samsung and vivo (and potentially others that follow) reach far more users. Extending effective, privacy-preserving, on-device protections beyond Google’s own hardware is one of the more consequential ways Android can raise the baseline security of the platform.
The same expansion also illustrates Google’s evolving strategy: rather than keeping every advanced AI feature locked inside Pixel, selective high-value protections are being offered to partners under controlled conditions. Samsung received the feature inside its own dialer; vivo may follow a similar or different path. Either way, the direction of travel is clear.
For users, the practical advice is straightforward. If your phone already supports Scam Detection, enable it. Keep the Phone app (or the manufacturer’s dialer) updated. Treat unexpected calls that create urgency with skepticism, regardless of what any AI warning does or does not say. And watch for official confirmation from vivo and Google about exactly which devices, markets, and languages will receive the capability.
Phone scams are not going away. Voice cloning and social-engineering techniques will continue to improve. Features like Scam Detection do not eliminate the threat, but they raise the cost and reduce the success rate of many common attacks. Expanding that protection to more manufacturers is a meaningful step in the right direction — provided the implementation remains on-device, opt-in, and transparent. The teardown evidence suggests vivo may be the next chapter in that expansion. Official announcements will determine how quickly and how broadly it arrives.
