Google has steadily expanded the self-diagnostic capabilities of its Pixel phones over the past couple of years. What started with relatively basic tools has evolved into a more comprehensive system that aims to help users identify and resolve hardware and software problems without immediately needing to contact support or visit a repair shop. The latest development, uncovered through an APK teardown of the Pixel Troubleshooting app (version 1.0.962958926), points to a new “Connectivity health” feature focused specifically on mobile data, calls, and Wi-Fi.

This feature is still in development and has not rolled out publicly. Like other findings from APK teardowns, it may change, arrive later than expected, or never ship in its current form. Nonetheless, the early implementation offers a clear window into Google’s direction: making Pixels more proactive and user-friendly when everyday connectivity problems arise.


The Broader Context of Pixel Diagnostics


Pixel devices already include several diagnostic tools. A long-standing hidden utility is accessible by dialing *#*#7287#*#* in the Phone app. This launches a comprehensive repair-style diagnostics interface that can test display, sensors, camera, audio, connectivity (including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC), and more. Users can run individual tests, group checks, or a full diagnostic sequence. Results help determine whether a problem is software-related or points toward hardware failure.

More recently, Google has surface-level tools through the Pixel Troubleshooting app and the “Device health & support” section in Settings. This dashboard consolidates battery health information, device temperature, storage status, software updates, charging diagnostics, and touch diagnostics. It also provides pathways to warranty details and support. Bluetooth diagnostics arrived earlier in 2026 via an update to the same Troubleshooting app, allowing users to test connections with Pixel Buds, Pixel Watch, Android Auto, or other accessories and receive guidance on common failure points.

These tools reflect a deliberate strategy. Google is reducing friction for users who experience intermittent or hard-to-reproduce issues—exactly the kind of problems that frustrate people and often lead to unnecessary support tickets or returns. Connectivity problems are among the most common complaints across smartphones, influenced by carrier networks, Wi-Fi environments, settings conflicts, software bugs, and occasional hardware degradation.


What “Connectivity Health” Appears to Offer


According to the teardown, a new “Connectivity health” option will appear under Settings > Network & internet. Tapping it surfaces an overview of the phone’s detected status for Wi-Fi, mobile data, and calls. If issues are present, the system directs users to dedicated diagnostic flows:

  • Mobile data diagnostics — This is the most complete of the three in the current build. It allows users to check data connectivity and speed. The tool then offers recommendations to improve cellular performance. One documented suggestion was changing Private DNS settings to “Off” or “Automatic.” After applying changes, the feature generates a report summarizing the modifications made during the session. Once resolved, the Connectivity health status updates to “Normal.”
  • Call diagnostics — Intended to help identify problems with incoming and outgoing calls. Only initial screens were visible in the tested build; the full step-by-step troubleshooting flow was not yet active.
  • Wi-Fi diagnostics — Designed to diagnose issues with Wi-Fi connections. Like call diagnostics, this remains incomplete in the current version of the app.


The overall design philosophy mirrors the existing diagnostics pattern: detect a problem, guide the user through logical checks and potential fixes, document what was changed, and confirm restoration of normal function. This is more structured and less free-form than traditional troubleshooting articles or generic “restart your phone” advice.


Why This Matters for Everyday Users


Connectivity issues are rarely straightforward. A sudden drop in mobile data speed could stem from network congestion, incorrect APN settings, a Private DNS configuration that interferes with certain carriers, aggressive battery optimization killing background processes, a faulty SIM, software glitches after an update, or even hardware antenna degradation over time. Call problems might involve VoLTE/VoNR settings, Wi-Fi calling conflicts, or carrier-side issues. By packaging diagnostics into the system settings and pairing them with actionable recommendations and change reports, Google lowers the barrier for non-technical users. Instead of searching forums or contacting carrier support first, many people will be able to run a guided check and either resolve the issue themselves or arrive at support conversations with clearer information.

The Private DNS example is particularly telling. Private DNS (using DNS-over-TLS) improves privacy and security but can occasionally cause compatibility problems with certain mobile networks or captive portals. Having the diagnostic tool surface this as a potential culprit, and then log the change, is practical and transparent.


Technical and Strategic Implications


The feature lives inside the Pixel Troubleshooting app, the same package that powers the Device health & support dashboard and Bluetooth diagnostics. This suggests Google is consolidating diagnostic experiences under one evolving system rather than scattering them across unrelated Settings menus. Over time, Connectivity health could integrate more deeply with Adaptive Connectivity features (which already help manage switches between Wi-Fi and mobile data for battery and performance) or with carrier-specific tools.

From a development perspective, the incomplete state of Call and Wi-Fi diagnostics indicates ongoing work. Google may still be refining the detection logic, expanding the recommendation engine, or ensuring the tools behave correctly across different carriers, regions, and Pixel models. Because these diagnostics involve network interfaces and potentially privileged settings, careful permission handling and privacy considerations are required.

There is also a support-efficiency angle. When users share diagnostic reports or describe the steps the tool already guided them through, Google’s support agents and carrier partners can diagnose residual issues faster. This aligns with the existing “Usage & diagnostics” opt-in that shares performance data (including network quality metrics) to help improve the platform.


Potential Limitations and Realistic Expectations


No on-device tool can solve every connectivity problem. Carrier outages, local interference, damaged antennas, or complex multi-device home network configurations will still require external troubleshooting. The current teardown only confirms basic recommendation examples; the depth of analysis (for instance, whether it tests signal strength across bands, evaluates handover behavior, or inspects VPN/proxy interference) remains unknown.

APK teardowns also carry inherent uncertainty. Code can be present for months or years before public release, and features sometimes ship in reduced form or are restricted to specific Pixel generations. The article notes that these options were manually enabled, reinforcing that the public-facing version may differ.


Looking Ahead


If Connectivity health ships in a polished state, it will represent another step in Pixel’s maturation as a “self-aware” platform. Combined with battery health insights, touch diagnostics, Bluetooth troubleshooting, the hidden full diagnostics suite, and the Device health & support overview, Google is building a layered diagnostic ecosystem. Users gain more agency; Google gains fewer ambiguous support cases and richer telemetry for future improvements.

For Pixel owners who have dealt with intermittent data drops, one-way audio on calls, or flaky Wi-Fi after updates, the promise of a guided, system-level tool is genuinely useful. The feature is not yet available, but its appearance in recent builds of the Troubleshooting app signals that Google is actively investing in this area. As development continues, further details—such as expanded recommendation logic, support for more edge cases, or tighter integration with Adaptive Connectivity—should become clearer.

In the meantime, existing tools remain valuable.
